Pause: A Response to Berwick Church
Autumn 2020

As part of the Saving Berwick project in 2021, Arts in Mind made artwork in response to the murals, interior and landscape surrounding Berwick Church.
Arts in Mind meet weekly at Towner Eastbourne and make artwork alongside each other in a studio setting to support positive mental health. They are supported by Mandy Wax, and for this project have worked for eight weeks with Lucy Steggals.
Over the course of the project the group have explored the landscape and setting around the building, its connection to contemporary art and the murals inside the building by members of the Bloomsbury set. They have learned new techniques including frottage, marbling and stop-frame animation, incorporating new materials such as graphite and dried flowers.
The group were invited to make work to be installed in the church. They worked both collaboratively and independently to make something that shares their ideas and feelings about the church which invites visitors to in turn explore it in new and creative ways. They have produced a short film of animations viewable in the Church, and a print pile of copies of their individual 2D work, as prompts for future visitors.
With thanks to the artists: Linda Hartley, Amber, JP Janes, Aaron Nixon, Stephen Cogger, Christine, Sue K, Sue, Janet, Sarah, Brian, Andy, Elizabeth, Lucy Steggals and Mandy Wax.
