From the director of Tangerine, The Florida Project and Red Rocket, Sean Baker comes this sparkling, raucous, electrifying tragicomedy, winner of this year’s Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or.
A young Uzbek American stripper from Brooklyn, Ani (a revelatory Mikey Madison) gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she marries oligarch’s son Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn) after a dizzying romance. But once the news reaches Russia, their fairytale is threatened, and his parents set out for New York to get the marriage annulled.
A romantic drama with a bleeding edge, Anora is a thrill ride and an emotional whirlwind about the currencies of life – love, sex, money, and green cards – and their cross-cultural appeals.
“Sean Baker’s amazing, full-throttle tragicomedy of romance, denial and betrayal” ★★★★ The Guardian
