Nazaré, Portugal: home of the biggest waves in the world, including the 100ft World Record Wave surfed by Garrett McNamara. When filmmaker Minna Dufton began her documentary about elite big wave champion surfer, the “tiny fighter” Joana Andrade, she didn’t know that Joana was battling a terrifying fear of drowning. But when she found out, cinematic serendipity brought Joana together with Finnish world champion freediver Johanna Nordblad for the most unusual of training sessions.
Spanning the crashing waves of the south to the dark stillness of a frozen lake in the Finnish far north, Big vs Small is a film about the power of mental and emotional strength over fear and what happens when two elite female champions share their extraordinary talents and trust each other.
“An instant classic… it’s impossible to not be inspired by this beautifully explored and captured journey of self-discovery” Wavelength Magazine
