Jeffrey Wright gives an Oscar-nominated, career-best performance in Cord Jefferson’s terrific directorial debut (which is also in receipt of four other Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor, for Sterling K. Brown).
A frustrated novelist, Thelonius Ellison, or ‘Monk’ (Wright) is fed up with a literary establishment that profits from Black stories built on tired and offensive tropes. Disillusioned and forced back home to cohabit with his troubled family, including his sister Lisa (Tracee Ellis Ross) and his estranged brother Cliff (Brown), he uses a pseudonym to write a book that propels him to the heart of the hypocrisy he claims to disdain.
A sharp satire about which Black stories American culture values, based on Percival Everett’s acclaimed novel Erasure, American Fiction is also a rich and compelling drama about family and one man’s struggle to define himself.
