Starring Alec Guinness, Stanley Holloway and Sid James, The Lavender Hill Mob is a joyful Ealing caper, celebrating its 70th anniversary this year.
Henry Holland (Guinness) has worked for decades as a transfer agent for the delivery of gold bullion. Shy and retiring, ignored by his employers, he dreams of executing the perfect gold robbery. The only catch is how to move the stolen gold, but when he befriends souvenir-maker Pendlebury (Holloway), he realises that with Pendlebury’s smelting equipment, there could be a novel way of smuggling it into France. Bringing professional criminals Lackery (James) and Shorty (Alfie Bass) on board, together this motley crew begin their unlikely crime.
Enduringly funny and shot on the streets of a London still bearing the scars of the Blitz, The Lavender Hill Mob is one of Ealing’s most good-natured comedies.
