Artists Hayley Field and Jacqueline Utley from the collaborative project Obscure Secure will work in residence at Towner Eastbourne to conduct research and share their process as practice-based artist researchers exploring the visibility of women artists in collections. The residency takes place during the Wertheim exhibitions, A Life in Art: Lucy Wertheim and Reuniting the Twenties Group and will encourage visitors to become active researchers. The artists’ cataloguing and archiving processes focus on the work of Kathleen Walne (1915-2011) as fellow painters from a position of care. Kathleen, who was represented by and worked for Lucy Wertheim as a young artist, also cared for her in old age.

During the residency a workshop day for early career artists will invite them to creatively participate in researching the women artists in the Wertheim exhibitions; a book group will delve into Wertheim’s 1947 memoir Adventure in Art. Alongside this activity in the studio there will be Obscure Secure reference material, archive and visual research for visitors to engage with.
