Free, drop-in
This event is part of Towner 100 Celebration on Saturday 27 May 2023. From 10.00am to 10.00pm join us to celebrate Towner’s 100th birthday! Throughout the day and into the evening, you’ll find workshops, performances, installations and DJs.
As part of our Towner 100 Celebration Day, the specially formed band South Coast Brass will perform Dr Liz Lane’s work Rhythm of Light for Towner’s 100th birthday. Before each performance, Dr Liz Lane will join the band to introduce the piece.
Rhythm of Light celebrates the life and work of Barbara Hepworth.
South Coast Brass will perform two movements from the celebrated piece, Landscape and Shadow cast by the sun, multiple times throughout the day. The movement titles are based on some of the sculptor's quotations.
Landscape is inspired by how memories of Hepworth’s childhood journeys across Yorkshire remained with her throughout her life. The music ebbs and flows with the hills and roads before slowing slightly to reach the crest of the hill, then returning to the constant patter of the engine.
Shadow cast by the sun is reflective of the sculptor creating on her own but not alone, much like the process of writing music, and a sense of poignant and focused isolation before sharing the work with others.
Performance times
Performances take place in the plaza, just outside Towner. Please note that performance times are subject to change depending on weather conditions.
