Towner Eastbourne’s open exhibition brings together the best artists from across East and West Sussex. Featuring painting, photography, drawing, sculpture, moving image works and installation, Sussex Open 2018 showcases some of the most dynamic and interesting work by artists at every level of their career, from new talent to established figures.
Also featuring the winners of the Eastbourne Arts Circle Commission Award, a new funding award sponsored by Eastbourne Arts Circle with the aim of supporting the creation of new artwork.
The works in the exhibition, as well as the recipients of the Eastbourne Arts Circle Commission Award have been selected by a panel made up of painter and printmaker Tom Hammick, Jenny Lund and Brian Cass.
Speaking about what visitors can expect from this year’s exhibition, Cass said: “Sussex Open is a unique opportunity to discover the breath of artistic talent in our region, with artists often working in unprecedented ways and across different artistic forms. As ever, the submissions for this year’s exhibition were as strong as they were varied, making the selection process very difficult. We are particularly grateful to our long term supporters Eastbourne Arts Circle for their generosity in supporting the new commission award, which will enable the production and display of new artwork for this year’s exhibition.”
Artists who have previously exhibited work in Towner’s Open exhibition have gone on to be selected for John Moore’s Painting Prize, the Jerwood Drawing Prize, the BFI Film Festival in the experimental film category and have been shortlisted for the Mark Tanner Sculpture Prize.
