The Ravilious Collection: New Extended Display Coming Soon
Posted on 22 April 2025
Eric Ravilious, Cuckmere Haven, 1939. Towner Eastbourne.
Towner has long been the custodian of the largest collection of works by Eric Ravilious (1903-1942). This autumn, we are building upon our extensive work and research into Ravilious and his contemporaries by launching a new, bespoke space dedicated to this much-loved artist. The space will feature an expanded display of Ravilious’ works from the Towner Collection, showcasing the prodigious output of one of Eastbourne’s most celebrated inhabitants.
A must-see for fans of Ravilious and newcomers alike, the display will feature watercolours, preparatory drawings, prints and ceramics by Ravilious, as well as works from some of his closest friends and peers, including his wife Tirzah Garwood and friends Edward Bawden and Peggy Angus. The gallery will incorporate our Collection Library, featuring books relating to Ravilious and other Collection artists, as well as providing a quiet study area.
Please note, for conservation purposes, in preparation for a long-term display in this new space, we will be ‘resting’ most of our Ravilious works from gallery exhibitions from 22 April until the new space opens on 26 September. However, Ravilious works can still be viewed during this period by booking a Behind the Scenes Tour of our Art Store (see our website for details). Ravilious’ works Interior at Furlongs and Long Man of Wilmington (both 1939) also feature in Sussex Modernism (23 May to 27 Sept).
