Dementia Friendly Screening: Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical
(PG)
Matthew Warchus, Matilda The Musical, 2022
From the radiant original novel by Roald Dahl, the tale of Matilda, a young girl coming to terms with her extraordinariness, has always been a surefire classic. Matilda The Musical is delightful, charming and expertly choregraphed with an energetic soundtrack bound to tug at some heartstrings. The cast includes Alisha Weir in the lead role and a beguilling Emma Thompson as Ms Trunchbull, clearly relishing in her villain era.
For this Dementia Friendly screening, our house lights will be slightly raised to provide a more relaxed and comfortable setting. Everyone is welcome to attend, but we ask that you are mindful of the context and understand that people may need to regularly leave and return.
Wednesday 1 February, 2.00pm.

Morocco
(U)
Josef Von Sternberg, Morocco, 1930
Starring Marlene Dietrich and Gary Cooper, Morocco is an ultra-sophisticated love story, drawing us in to a burgeoning romance between magnetic cabaret singer Amy Jolly (Dietrich) and womanising legionairre Tom Brown (Cooper). It only takes a shake of a tuxedo-clad leg for Mademoiselle Amy to hypnotise Tom with her captivating androgynous act in this sensuous relic of cinema that confronts and subverts femininity, sexuality and gender.
This film is presented in association with Eastbourne Rainbow, a social group for the 50+ LGBTQIA+ communities living in Eastbourne and the surrounding areas.

Tár
(15)
Todd Field, Tár, 2022
Power, ego and the heat of the spotlight are common themes in the realm of rise-and-fall celebrity drama films, but here barely scratch the surface of this tour-de-force. Nominated in five Oscar categories, Tár documents the torment of fictional composer and conductor Lydia Tár, plagued by intense and tumultuous attraction, haunted by imaginary voices and navigating the enormity of her own significance.
Cate Blanchett's performance of this controversial figure is complemented expertly by intense dramatic cinematography and brought back down to earth through scathing social commentary, bringing dynamics of power into question over those of gender and sexuality.

All The Beauty And The Bloodshed
(18)
Laura Poitras, All The Beauty And The Bloodshed, 2022
All The Beauty And The Bloodshed is an Oscar-nominated documentary revealing how Purdue Pharma, owned by the Sackler family, contributed to the 1990s opioid epidemic and how photographer Nan Goldin dedicated herself to holding them accountable.
Goldin, whose work famously captured the complexity and courage of LGBTQIA+ subcultures and documented the HIV/AIDs crisis, passionately confronts the notorious financiers of the arts world in this thrilling exposé following her quest to target museums and call to question their allegiances.

The Fabelmans
(PG)
Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans, 2022
Steven Spielberg's semi-autobiographical love-letter to cinema is wonderfully self aware in its ability to have some fun and utilise the director's "anything-can-happen-if-you-believe" brand of storytelling while hitting some much more serious emotional beats.
Spielberg has always based his filmmaking on three elements; storytelling, character development and suspence, and achieves this beautifully in The Fabelmans, a story about a young boy growing as an artist, learning sometimes less-than-savoury secrets and getting to grips with the complexities of the people who surround but also inspire him.
