Over Summer 2021, Towner Eastbourne invited members of the LGBTQIA+ community in East Sussex to take part in a unique creative project, exploring personal responses to artworks in the Towner Collection, through a queer lens.
The result of these sessions is Collectively, a new Towner podcast exploring themes of the body, landscape and queer narratives in the Towner Collection.
Working with artist Renee Vaughan Sutherland, participants came together in a series of group sessions to view and discuss a selection of artworks chosen by Renee — by artists such as Frances Hodgkins, Patricia Preece and Wolfgang Tillmans — exploring personal responses and connections that each of these artworks inspired. Following a period of further research and reflection, each participant was individually invited back to Towner to discuss their selected artwork in an intimate conversation with Renee.
Over eight episodes - featuring contributions from Harry McMorrow, Vicki Norman, Andrea Mindel, Flo Wright, Eva Jonas, Emily Love, David Harris, John Manuell, Stephen Deutz and Matthew Davies - Collectively deep dives into the specific artworks that personally resonated for us, revealing the Towner Collection through new perspectives, memories, emotions and experiences of queerness.
