From owning a caravan at Cuckmere Haven and walks along the South Downs, to now residing in Hammersmith – Sheila has lived near many places captured by the artist and designer Eric Ravilious.
Using Ravilious’s work as prompts and drawing from her memoir Old Rage, Sheila will open up in conversation about her life, work, family and friends. Bringing to Towner her funny, feisty, honest take on a world so different from the wartime world of her childhood, but one which she finds there are always reasons for joy.
This event will be followed by a Q&A.
Dame Sheila Hancock
Dame Sheila Hancock is one of Britain’s most highly regarded actors. She has directed and acted for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. Following the death of her husband, John Thaw, she wrote a no.1 bestselling memoir, The Two of Us (2004), which won British Book Award for Author of the Year. It was followed by a memoir of widowhood, Just Me (2007) and an acclaimed novel, Miss Carter’s War (2014). Her memoir, Old Rage, takes a wry look at life in her ninth decade, Brexit, ailing health and life under lockdown.
