Kubrick went to extraordinary lengths to recreate the look of the period, using pioneering techniques to evoke the light and texture of the era’s great visual stylists, Gainsborough and Hogarth. The result is sublimely beautiful and a genuine masterpiece, a mournful, sardonic film about the pitilessness of the aristocracy and the caprice of fate.
