An inventive and soulful portrait of cultural icon Marianne Faithfull from acclaimed filmmaking duo Jane Pollard and Iain Forsyth (20,000 Days on Earth, The Extraordinary Miss Flower), Broken English triumphantly defies categorisation – much like its extraordinary subject, who died early last year.
A complex, layered film, it rests on the fictional ‘Ministry of Not Forgetting’ – led by Tilda Swinton and her trusty interviewer George MacKay – who together take Marianne on a journey into her rich and event-filled past. Images, clips and interviews are interspersed with musical responses by Beth Orton, Courtney Love, Warren Ellis, Suki Waterhouse and Nick Cave. Delivering a playful, provocative dive into Faithfull’s storied life, Pollard and Forsyth expertly rewire the documentary genre once more with their most ambitious film to date.
