Zines have always been tools of resistance, community and DIY culture, they are cheap to make, reproduce and disseminate. In this hands-on introductory day course, you'll explore the history and culture of zine-making alongside bookbinding.
You'll learn two classic bookbinding techniques (saddle stitch and coptic stitch) and leave with handmade books you've bound and decorated using collage, stickers, tape and found imagery often used in zine making.
This course is designed to be accessible to everyone, whether you're a seasoned zine maker, or never made a book before.
What to expect
- An introduction to zine culture and its history as a tool for communication and dissent
- Two bookbinding techniques: saddle stitch and coptic stitch
- Making and decorating your own books
- Collage and mixed-media approaches
- A simple bookbinding kit is included in the course price
Useful to know
This is a hands-on workshop so please wear practical clothing.
There will be an hour lunch break where you could book into our restaurant Light, visit one of the cafes near to Towner or bring a packed lunch to eat by the sea.
