HAF: A Future Archaeology

Supported by the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) project, Towner is delivering creative artist-led activities around art, nature, heritage and collaboration for young people eligible for Free School Meals. 

Eligible families are invited to take part in artist-led sessions this summer! 

In a safe, supported, and creative environment, enjoy making and activities led by artist Laura Ribbons. We'll explore multi-sensory routes into themes relating to the heritage and archaeology of Sussex through play, making and sensory exploration.

Lunch and snacks will be provided for participants. 

Sessions are free for families eligible for free school meals 

We have a budget available to make this event as accessible as possible – this can include further interpretation services or other access arrangements we can meet to enable you to participate. If you require access arrangements, please get in touch no more than two weeks before the event date so that we can book a service if needed 

Caregivers are welcome to join sessions alongside their dependents, please let us know at the booking stage if you plan to accompany your child/ren 

Towner has step free access, with sessions takes place in Towner's ground floor studio 

Towner has gender-neutral and accessible toilets on the ground floor, a baby-change and cafe on the ground floor. We can access a Changing Places facility only with advance notice, bookers must let us know one week in advance if they may require one. 

We have two designated SEND sessions on 5 and 19 August, these sessions have a higher adult to child ratio and fewer participants, but participants are welcome to attend all sessions, please get in touch if you’d like to talk through adjustments and how we can support your child/ren to get involved

Laura Ribbons (b.1990) is an artist, facilitator and environmentalist.

As a socially-engaged practitioner, Ribbons explores our evolving relationship to plants and landscape within the wider context of the climate crisis. She is inspired by the idea that art has the power to start difficult conversations, while simultaneously bringing people together and creating space for experimentation and play.

Her solo exhibition and community project Plants Make Places at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery (2025 -2026), successfully secured Arts Council lottery funding and explored how plants shape our sense of place, identity and belonging. The project encompassed collaborations with community groups from across Hastings. At the core of her practice, Laura believes that art has the power to transform people’s lives and that it should be accessible to all.
