Please note: we are only taking bookings for the full four week course
Gain exclusive out-of-hours access to Impressions in Watercolour: J. M. W. Turner and his Contemporaries and learn about Turner's life and experimentational watercolours in this four-week art history course led by Jill Denman.
As well as discovering Turner's work first hand, you'll explore those of some of his most notable contemporaries, including John Sell Cotman and Thomas Girtin.
There will also be the opportunity to visit the extended bespoke space dedicated to the work of Eric Ravilious, and discover how he exploited the potential of watercolour to create some of the Towner collection’s best-loved works.
Themes such as the rise in the status and potential of watercolour in the 18th and 19th century, exciting developments in materials and the impact of this on the artists’ technique will form the focus for discussion.
Following a refreshment break (tea, coffee and pastries will be provided), the latter part of the session will provide a chance to develop these themes and discussions further, supported by illustrated tutor-led presentations. A weekly list of the works discussed will be provided and links to further material and information about the artists will be available after each session to those course members who would like to pursue further independent research.
