Lunchtime Response: Photography & Eric Ravilious's Beachy Head

Join artist and photographer Natalja Poplavska for a talk about her photographs inspired by Eric Ravilious’s painting Beachy Head (1939).

Natalja travelled to Beachy Head to locate the exact viewpoint that Ravilious’s painting was made from but couldn't find the precise position. We will discuss why this might be: is it due to the receding UK coastline? Or due to the artistic licence used by Ravilious to transform the landscape, rather than directly copying it?

Natalja will link this to her own ongoing project Seeking Silence, where she has been photographing the sea almost every day since 31 October 2025, observing how light, weather and atmosphere constantly change a place.

Natalja Poplavska is an East Sussex-based photographer originally from Latvia.

Her practice explores memory, light and emotional connection to place, with the sea often acting as a space of shelter and reflection. At the core of her work is timeless unity, a continuous relationship between memory, landscape, and presence.

Her ongoing project Seeking Silence documents almost daily encounters with the sea, where the same place constantly changes through atmosphere, weather and time.
