Mike Leigh takes on another British master in this richly detailed 2014 film about the life of J. M. W. Turner.
Mike Leigh (Naked, Life is Sweet, Hard Truths) takes on another British master in Mr. Turner, his richly detailed 2014 film about the life of J. M. W. Turner, the 19th century Romantic painter celebrated for the celestial quality of light he achieved in his land and seascapes.
A true English eccentric, Turner (Timothy Spall) lives the last 25 years of his life with gusto. While working on his imaginative, increasingly dynamic paintings, he secretly becomes romantically involved with a Margate widow (Marion Bailey), while leaning on his faithful housekeeper (Dorothy Atkinson). Spirited, funny and unsentimental, with a sublimely gruff performance from Spall at its centre, Mr. Turner is one of Leigh’s most inspired films and a fitting tribute to its subject.
Please note that for the Relaxed Screening, the house lights will be slightly raised throughout, and the film will be played at a slightly lower volume to provide a more comfortable setting. Everyone is welcome to attend, but we ask that you are mindful of the context and understand that people may need to regularly leave and return.
