Writer-director Laura Wandel’s extraordinary, multi award-winning debut is a child’s eye view of school life. Anxious seven-year-old Nora (Maya Vanderbeque) must go back to school despite longing to stay with her dad (Karim Leklou). But though Nora’s the one who purportedly needs looking after, she soon becomes responsible for her brother Abel (Günter Duret), who’s being bullied by the other kids. Nora finds herself in a quandary. Should she tell the adults or remain silent? And if she does tell the adults, what will the ramifications be?
Intimately, concisely immersing you in the world of its naturalistic young performers, recalling the clear-eyed work of filmmakers like Jacques Audiad and the Dardennes brothers, Playground is a bold, lucid and gripping depiction of the all-encompassing world of school life.
“A remarkable achievement” ★★★★ The Guardian
