Day Course
Political Printmaking with Emily Johns
Learn traditions of political printmaking techniques with tutor and printmaker Emily Johns.
A practical day course that combines examining the work of Artists International Association (AIA) members, whose works are on display for Comrades in Art: Artists Against Fascism, and traditions of political printmaking, along with learning and using different printmaking techniques.
Tutor and printmaker Emily Johns will lead on linocutting in the morning and tetra pak etching in the afternoon.
This is a hands-on workshop using paint and ink so please wear practical clothing.
There will be an hour lunch break where you could book into our restaurant Light, visit one of the cafes near to Towner or bring a packed lunch to eat by the sea.
Participants will receive discounted access to the exhibition via a code sent in an email ahead of the event.
Emily Johns is a Sussex printmaker. She grew up in Camden Town where as a child she met some of the artists in the AIA. While an art student at Goldsmiths she was targeted by one of the police spies now subject to the Undercover Policing Inquiry.
She has worked as an illustrator, educator, journalist and editor of Peace News and activist involved in art and peace work concerning Iraq, Iran and related issues since the early 1990s.
Her work has been shown in many solo and group exhibitions and used in a wide variety of ways beyond gallery settings. Much of her work has been commissioned by campaigning groups and used in demonstrations and related publications. She is the recipient of several awards and her work is held in a number of public collections.
The AIA was established in 1933 to unify artists against fascism and war, rallying comrades across Europe during the Spanish Civil War and efforts to overcome the rise of fascist General Francisco Franco. The artists involved worked across a range of styles, and the Association also focused on wider access to art, through affordable lithograph prints and mural commissions.
We have a budget available to make this event as accessible as possible – this can include further interpretation services or other access arrangements we can meet to enable you to participate.
