Eric Ravilious: Four Week Landscapes Watercolour Course

Learn to paint like Eric Ravilious in celebration of The Ravilious Collection, Towner’s permanent exhibition of his famous works.

In this beginner-friendly, four-week course, you’ll explore a range of techniques used by Ravilious during his time as a landscape and WWII watercolour artist. The course will take place at Towner and include one session outdoors in the local Sussex landscape.

This course is perfect for anyone just starting out in watercolour, or for those who haven’t given it a go yet. All are welcome. It’s a relaxed, low-pressure course focused on exploring Ravilious’s process and learning from his unique way of working - not trying to make an exact copy of his work or creating a ‘perfect masterpiece’! The aim is to have fun, meet some lovely like-minded people, and discover new and creative ways to use watercolour. By the end of the course, you’ll leave with a chunky, hand-bound sketchbook full of experiments, techniques, notes and paintings. You’ll also gain experience painting outdoors, learn about materials and what to buy, and how to develop more finished pieces inspired by what you’ve learned throughout the course.

All materials are provided so no need to bring anything, just yourself! Hot drinks will be provided at the start of each session.

This workshop will be taught by Zara Wilkins, who has over three years’ experience teaching art to beginner adults. She first studied illustration at university, graduating in 2019 and subsequently worked in illustration before moving into her passion of teaching. Zara is a multidisciplinary artist, spanning many mediums over her education, career, and personal life. For the last three years she has been teaching watercolours full time and as of this year has begun teaching lino printing to beginners in Brighton.
