Please note: we are only taking bookings for the full four week course
This four week art history course, led by Jill Denman, will explore a variety of printmaking techniques, and look at ways in which artists have experimented with the possibilities of etching, wood engraving, lithography, screen printing and linocut in their practice.
The first part of each session will take place in Towner Cinema and will focus in detail on selected works by artists including Lucien Freud, Pablo Picasso, Barbara Hepworth, Andy Warhol and Emma Stibbon, in order to illustrate the technical processes involved. Themes such as the function of prints and the collaborative nature of the artist and the print studio will form the basis for discussion.
Following a refreshment break (tea, coffee, and sweet treats will be provided), there will then be an opportunity to visit the Towner Art Store, which holds a particularly rich and varied collection of prints. Selected prints will be examined at first hand, and discussions will build on themes introduced in the first part of the session.
A weekly list of the works discussed will be provided, and links to further material and information about the artists will be available after each session to those course members who would like to pursue further independent research.
