An Oscar-nominated Willem Dafoe stars in Oscar-winning director Sean Baker’s (Anora, Tangerine) unforgettable depiction of life beneath the poverty line, as seen through the eyes of a child.
Precocious six-year-old Moonee (Brooklynn Prince) and her friends live in a scuzzy Florida motel. They’re too busy romping around its grounds and its kindly manager's (Dafoe) office to recognise the struggles facing the adults around them – including Moonee's young mother Halley (Bria Vinaite) who has recently lost her job. Together, Halley and Moonee careen through a life lived precariously close to the edge.
A vivid portrait of unseen America, with an astonishing performance from Prince and tender, lyrical storytelling, The Florida Project abounds with a vibrant and volatile energy.
This title is part of the public programming for Gathered Around the Sun, an exhibition curated by Towner’s Collections & Acquisitions Committee. Considering both the artworks within the exhibition, as well as the experience of being on the committee, this series of films explores themes of community, adolescence and growing up, landscapes, celestial bodies, domesticity, womanhood, motherhood, and more.
“The Florida Project explores motherhood, the home, and childhood innocence all encapsulated through an imperfect but loving mother and daughter relationship. With artist Sophie Barber’s work central to Gathered Around the Sun, it felt important to celebrate her own recent journey into motherhood.” – Maddie Lock, member of the Collections & Acquisitions Committee.
