Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan (Little Women) gives a remarkable performance as a young woman grappling with addiction in Nora Fingscheidt’s (System Crasher) BAFTA-nominated The Outrun, based on the bestselling memoir by Amy Liptrot.
Fresh out of rehab, Rona (Ronan) returns home to the wild and beautiful Orkney Islands. After over a decade in London, where she both found and lost love, and where her life was derailed by alcoholism, Rona, now 30, attempts for the first time to reconcile with her traumatic past amidst the majestic landscape of her youth, surrounded by ferocious gales and a stormy sea. Both visceral and delicate, The Outrun is a moving and complex portrait of one individual’s path to recovery, and of a troubled mind seeking to heal.
This title is part of the public programming for Gathered Around the Sun, an exhibition curated by Towner’s Collections & Acquisitions Committee. Considering both the artworks within the exhibition, as well as the experience of being on the committee, this series of films explores themes of community, adolescence and growing up, landscapes, celestial bodies, domesticity, womanhood, motherhood, and more.
“The Outrun is a title that captures the experience of navigating life in your 20s – the life stage of many of the committee members. Set in the blissful Scottish Highlands, with the sea as a character in itself, it felt like the perfect film to showcase the ups and downs of life in your 20s in a small seaside town, much like Eastbourne.” – Maddie Lock, member of the Collections & Acquisitions Committee.
