Dr Joe Thornberry unpacks the hidden content of key works on display in the exhibition, including The Fried Fish Shop – a political allegory from the mid-1930s as intriguing as Holbein’s Ambassadors from the 1530s. Rowe was a prime mover in forming the Artist International Association, a tireless campaigner, and an ever-thoughtful observer of a world in turmoil. As his paintings and designs from the 1920s to the 1960s attest, he was also an artist with a singular continuously developing vision.
